Jackpot Winner Files Case Against Son

I can still remember this story. 

I was right, on my first reaction about reading her story way back 2013.  

This will be a mother and son conflict problem in the future. 

So after six years this happened.

A 90-year-old Florida woman who took home $278 million from a winning Powerball ticket six years ago is suing her son and his financial advisers. 

Claiming the money was put into low-return investments while she was being charged $2 million in fees.

The lawsuit filed by Gloria Mackenzie last month in state court in Jacksonville against her son, Scott, and his financial advisers, alleges breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, negligence and exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

Scott Mackenzie had power of attorney over his mother's finances.

As the widow of a mill worker, and with little money until she was in her 80s, Gloria Mackenzie says she had scant education in managing a large sum of money and relied on her son.

"Prior to her good fortune, Gloria was living in a small, rented duplex ... for $375 a month," the lawsuit said. 

Her income was modest, fixed, and derived from her monthly Social Security and small widow's pension."

The low-return investments in CDs and money market accounts cost her tens of millions of dollars that she could have earned with another investment strategy, the lawsuit said.

Scott Mackenzie said in court papers that there's no basis for a lawsuit just because investments didn't grow the way his mother preferred and the value of the investments never decreased.

His mother's claims "are based solely on allegations that Scott introduced Gloria to an investment adviser who put her in conservative investment vehicles, in accordance with her chosen investment objectives, and effectively preserved her wealth," he said in court papers.

In May 2013, then age 84, Gloria Mackenzie purchased a winning Powerball ticket worth $590 million. 

After agreeing to get a lump sum and deducting taxes, Gloria Mackenzie took home $278 million. 

She gave half of her winning to her son, who had promised to care for her for the rest of her life, according to her lawsuit.

When the family of Gloria Mackenzie's daughter informed her that the financial adviser, Hank Madden, had previously faced professional discipline, Scott Mackenzie threatened to disinherit them, the lawsuit said. 

Madden hosts a local radio call-in show offering financial advice.

Winner Keeps a Secret

Woman googles husband, finds he won the lottery but never told her. 

On 2007, Donna Campbell became suspicious of her husband, Arnim Ramdass, when he started to keep the television turned off and disconnected the phone line. 

Her suspicions rose when she found a postcard about a new home purchase. 

But Campbell was unaware that her husband was hiding a $10.2 million secret from her until she Googled her husband's name and lottery number. 

She found a Florida lottery press release that named 17 airline mechanics who won the jackpot, her husband was one of them. 

The group of mechanics opted for the lump-sum payment of $10.2 million, meaning each of the 17 winners would receive about $600,000 before taxes. 

Since the winning, Ramdass took a leave of absence from work, according to his co-workers. 

He hasn't shown up at the couple's home and servers can't find him to hand him the lawsuit papers: 

She wants half the money and out of the marriage.

Lucky Cook Wins 

A cook from Cavite  claimed his share from the P47.1-million jackpot prize in the December 3, 2014 6/45 mega lotto draw. 

The 37-year-old single father was one of the three winners who picked the winning number combination of 5-9-11-14-23-28.

He collected more than P15.7 million.

The winner  has been betting on the lotto for 19 years.

He took the winning numbers from his and his son’s birthdays and bought just one lotto ticket.

The winner plans to use the money to buy a house and lot, open a restaurant of his own and put aside some of it for his son’s education.

So it was his destiny to win a lotto jackpot with just one lotto ticket.
